Aiko, who had grown very fond of the horse, begged her father to let her keep it. She promised to take care of the horse and ensure it would be happy and well-fed. She vowed to take a job in the village to pay for feed and other expenses.
From that day on, Aiko and the horse formed a deep bond.
She named him Kumo, which means “cloud” in Japanese, because of his soft, cloud-like mane.
Kumo became not only a faithful companion but also a cherished friend. He would go to where she worked at the end of the day and wait until she had finished, then knowing how tired she was would let her ride him home.
